Fashion At It's Finest!!!
Watch out Donna Karan, Giorgio Armani and Coco Chanel!! We have some motivated students on our hands that are going to be taking the fashion world by storm.
After noticing a student's interest in clothing design we created an invitation to explore this form of art by providing a few inspirational examples and a special sketch pad. She worked an entire day on her sketch and then made it become a 3D design plan.
She was very proud of her hard work and decided to share with the class during "Je Partage"
Sharing her successes sparked some major excitement amongst the other students which led to design Monday!!
We hope to keep the ball rolling with their interest in designing, creating and modelling their outfits. They even discussed the possibility of having a fashion show.
We will be adding new materials to their fashion inquiry over the next week but are looking for some help from any parents, family members or friends that may have knowledge about the design process, sewing or materials they would like to donate(fabric, buttons, sequence, velcro, thread, elastics, etc...). I am sad to say that Madame Schertzer's sewing knowledge is very limited and she needs your help. Please write a note in your child's communication book if you can help out. Tuesday, 2 December 2014
Feeling the holiday spirit
With the holidays approaching we have had many discussions and inquiries surrounding the holidays. Our music teachers Mme. Lee-Diagle and Mme. Bernard have been working with us to learn some new and old holiday favorites.
We've began decorating our class with different Christmas decorations and even added a few different trees.
Please keep an eye open in my our "sac en plastic" for a special invitation.
Bienvenue Marshmallow!
We received a special call from the office that Mme. Lira had received a special delivery for our class. We were ecstatic to discover the one and only Santa Claus, (or Père Noël in our class), had sent one of his very own magical elves to look over our class. Together we voted on a name, and came up with Marshmallow! We read the magical book Marshmallow brought and learned all about him and why he's here.
Marshmallow even had a friend from Sundowners who he can play with.

Some learning stories.
One of the many amazing aspects of an inquiry based curriculum, is allowing our students to learn independently at their individual pace. Below are some examples of everyday learning we captured in our class.

We have been doing an inquiry into trains ! We have been in the process of talking about what you need for a train station. We have brought in boxes and have brainstormed how to transform our classroom into a train station. We have been so excited we showed them that their is a Holiday Train coming to town.

The good old hockey game
A few weeks ago a group of our friends began playing a make shift hockey game with tubes and blocks we had in our class. They worked together to decide on rules for their game and even decided on team names.
As their interests grew we explored different aspects of hockey. We learned about famous players such as Tim Horton and Bobby Ore. We learned how to make a hockey rink and measured out the lines on our carpet. As time progressed we added mini hockey sticks, safety gear, and a rubber ball. We learned the lyrics to a popular French Canadian hockey song to improve our hockey vocabulary. After a month of excitement we finished off our unit with an intense tournament. The cheers were so loud they were heard down the hall!
Our enthusiasm was felt throughout the school and our Vice Principal Mme. Lira graciously donated tickets to an upcoming Spitfires game. And one of our early years teachers, M. Fullerton donated autographed rookie cards by New Jersey Devils player, Adam Hendrique. The students were given raffle tickets every time they did a random act of kindness (filled a friends bucket).
Congratulations to all of our winners!

Pumpkin fun
Thanks to some great donations we spent some time exploring our interest in pumpkins! We decorated them with letters. Figured out different ways to measure them, learnt about shapes by designing our jack-o-lanternan. We worked together to gut our pumpkins and ate some tasty seeds. Finally, we cut up our pumpkins and dispersed them in our field for hungry critters.
